0.2: Building Zumi

Zumi comes with a build guide in the box, but a video guide can come in handy as you follow along with the instructions. We recommend watching the video along with your build guide if you have never built a Zumi before. Once you’re done, go to the next step to check that Zumi is built correctly before turning it on.

Wait! Before turning Zumi on, there will be a few things to double-check. Not doing so can damage your Zumi.

First, the OLED cables should be connected correctly.

The MicroSD should be inserted so that the gold part is facing up.

The OLED should not be cracked and the IR sensors should not be bent.

The Pi0 pins should all be connected into the sockets. There should be no pins outside that are bent or exposed.

Check that the motors are oriented properly before putting on the shell. Motors that are placed backward may not spin.

Verify that when connecting the ribbon cable to the Pi Zerp, the latch remained intact. Not connecting the camera properly may result in the camera not working.

Before putting on the Zumi shell, check that the delicate connector is flush with the camera. If it looks lifted, gently push on the connector until you feel it click into place. If you have issues with your camera in the future, this is the first connector you should check. It can move around when packing up Zumi.

Last but certainly not least, check that the battery is connected in the right orientation before putting on the shell and turning on the switch. The red cable should be on the left and the black cable should be on the right.

Connecting the battery

When connecting the battery, match the red wire with the (+) on the PCB and the black wire with the (-) on the PCB. Please do not connect the battery to any other connector on the board.

Removing the battery

If you need to remove the battery, grab the connector from the white plastic on the battery connector. A pair of pliers will do the job. Avoid tugging on the battery from the wires.

Low battery

When the battery is low, charge or power off Zumi. Allowing the battery to completely discharge will decrease the power of the battery over time.

Storing Zumi

Always turn off Zumi when in storage. If you transport Zumi, it is also a good idea to disconnect the battery to avoid the switch turning itself on!
